NRCS Surveying Project (Service Points)
The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) will be providing an opportunity to brush up on your surveying skills while gaining service points for seminar. NRCS will be surveying farmland in here in Utah County on Saturday. They will provide training for everyone who volunteers. The group will survey once a week for 4 weeks, with a time commitment varying from 2-5 hours (including travel time). Please sign up in the CE office.
CANstruction (Service Points)
Are you putting off your service points? Earn up to 2 service points by donating canned food for the CANstruction food drive. 10 regular-sized cans are good for 1 service point (please no tomato paste). Place the can in any of the barrels in the Clyde.
Farrer Elementary (Field Trip)
Complete your field trip requirement before it is too late. There will be a tour of the Farrer Elementary school in south Provo on Wednesday, December 8th at 3:00 pm. Its address is 100 North 600 East, Provo. Please park on the tennis courts when you arrive. Sign up for this field trip in the CE office.
Balsa Wood Bridge Kits (Service Points)
Help out with the Civil Engineering Department’s annual Balsa Wood Bridge competition. Meet at the structures lab on Saturday, December 4th at 9:00 am. Volunteers will be putting together bridge kits that will go out to high schools across Utah so that high school students gain exposure to civil engineering. It will take around 2 hours of your morning.
Science Fair Judges (Service Points)
There are two opportunities for students to act as science fair judges at two different schools today (Thursday, December 2nd):
12:20 – 3:00 pm
-Dixon Middle School
3:00 – 4:15 pm
Please sign up in the CE office to participate in these opportunities.
ASCE/APWA Guest Speaker
A special guest speaker has been invited to the Southtowne Expo Center in Sandy Utah. It will be held on Thursday, December 16th at 7:00 pm. Student members of ASCE are given free admission for themselves and a guest. The speaker will discuss his experiences climbing Mt. Everest to team building.
Seminar notebooks are due on the last Thursday of the semester; December 9th. Please turn them in the provided boxes in the CE office.
Your final papers are due this Friday. Please turn them in at the CE office.
New CE En T-Shirts
Need a great Christmas present for someone? The Civil Engineering t-shirt is this year’s Tickle-Me-Elmo – everyone wants one. They are available in the CE office.
Closing Social (Activity Points)
The closing social will be held the last day of class; December 9th at 7:00 pm in the Step Down Lounge. There will be pizza and ice cream sundaes and good company. Activities include a karaoke contest, twister, and other fun games. ASCE members who reserve a spot before the activity will pay only $1. Everyone else will pay $3, including ASCE members who pay at the activity.
If you are not a member, need to renew your membership, or don’t know what ASCE is, talk to the secretaries in the CE office or sign up online at http://www.et.byu.edu/groups/byuasce/. Rates will be as follows: $7/year for 1st time seminar students and $7/semester or $10/year for returning students.
BYU Graduate Masters Program
If you are interested in applying to the CEEn Graduate Mastersprogram, please see Janice in the CE office. The application deadlineto start Spring/Summer/Fall is February 15 and the deadline to startwinter is August 15. Don't forget you will need to take the GRE atleast a minimum of one month before the application deadline so that the department can receive the exam results on time.
